Contracts
Many puppies are sold with contracts of purchase, (not just show/breeding puppies). What does this mean?
PET puppies may be sold with desexing contracts. Often there are also guidelines that you as a prospective puppy buyer need to follow to ensure that your new puppy grows to be the best it can be.
Contracts are beneficial not only for you as a puppy buyer for also for the breeder.
A good purchase contract should clearly layout what is expected from both parties in relation to the purchase of the puppy and in regard to the conditions of its purchase and for a time period covering it’s life.
Often it may cover instances of what should happen if any problems occur and detail health guarantees, monetary refunds, replacement puppies, time periods, health conditions, upbringing conditions, mating/breeding conditions.
Contracts for SHOW/BREEDING puppies are often put in place to allow you to use another kennels stud male or own a female bred by another kennel, for the purpose of making improvements within your own kennel—NOT for the purpose of supplying lots of breeding dogs to other people.
These contracts are designed to protect both the interests of the breeder and the purchaser of the puppy as well.
If a breeder sells on contract - please don't think it's a bad thing - it's a GOOD thing!
You should be able to obtain a copy in advance from the breeder of the puppy. Please read and consult with a third party if you have any concerns before signing any documentation.
You should always receive a copy of any signed documentation for your own records and future reference.
Co-ownership
If the breeder wants to sell their breeding main registered puppies in co-ownership - this is also not a bad thing - it means they care. They will NOT want to take your puppy away from you. If sold in co-ownership - make sure the conditions of ownership and conditions of residence are outlined in your contract.
Why Co-ownership?
Co-ownership is mainly used by breeders for people starting off in the breed. It gives you a link to a breeder who wants to be involved in your dogue journey.
Many breeders have spent a lot of time and money to get their breeding lines to a really high standard - both in terms of health and conformation, and obviously, they want to ensure that their pedigrees are going to be used to further advance the breed in the future.
Co-ownership is not to DICTATE what you can and can't do with your puppy, it is to help you and mentor you - as well as opening a lot of opportunities to you in terms of your own breeding program.
These experienced breeders know what will work with their lines, have researched pedigrees, and will be able to guide you in matings, so that known faults and health issues are not doubled up when breeding. It is very beneficial for people venturing into this breed, to enable them to breed good quality and healthy puppies from the very beginning.
Money cannot buy the experience and knowledge that can be obtained from people who have been in this breed for many years, and please don't be put off by 'Contracts' or 'Co-ownership'.
Just think - people still buy these puppies - people still want puppies on contract or co-ownership - which means if these breeders can still sell puppies with conditions - it means that these puppies are special, and in high demand, or they would not be able to sell them!
